New Spanish legislation bans elephants in circuses

The law will also ban the sale of pets in shops, prevent the use of impose prison sentences on animal abusers, and turn zoos into wildlife recovery centres.

The legislation was first tabled in 2022, and was approved by Spain’s Congress on February 9.  It will be rubber stamped by Senate shortly.  There was some controversy over the exclusion of hunting dogs, but for elephants it is good news.  No more performances in circuses, and the phase-out of exotic zoos.
